![]() Regarding the auto tranny versions, I think this is a perspective thing also as there were many more W203s with A/T and can't see why they would have many more problems - (an auto tranny is gentler on the engine for a start) - apart from the need for fluid changes and the perennial electrical connector leak.Ĭlick to expand. I wouldn't mind a quiet belted Benz engine but the replacement process doesn't bear thinking about. Just a thought, with all this talk about the single chain, most engine manufacturers use a puny rubber belt and while it has to be changed at about 100k, many go much longer so where's the great stress on this component? ![]() (I'll have to check and see whether they put a double chain on it! -Ha!) The next generation, quieter, more efficient M271 is worth the entry price - seems to me that Benz would not have continued putting the M271 in the latest E class unless it was relatively OK. I have to laugh every time I see the commercials running now and they say " MB-The best or nothing".Ĭlick to expand.Agree with you there Phil, apart from a couple of serial posters, there is no more comment about chains on the M271 than there is about chains on the M111. They seem way over-enginered and contain alot of crap you don't need in an entry level luxury car( C-Class cars in this case). It seems that the longevity of MB's these days in in serious question. Yes, I am more than a little concerned that they would put such a small, cheesy chain on ANY motor they made. Don't skimp on fuel, spend a little extra for the good stuff to keep the carbon down.ĭon't be afraid to rev it once in a while. Add chain replacements to the regiment and you'll probably be fine! 5 speed is pretty bulletproof.Īnd you have the updated head design. Use only approved stuff, and OEM parts for anything except brake pads. on time, flush the tranny every 60K miles or so,īe sure to replace the orings when you do. The $10K soft balance shaft gear replacement for the new V6's. Or you forgot to mention the 7 speed tranny failures, the soft AMG cams that fail, and Have they updated the new 1.8L with a 2 row chain? It's wierd but the gasket rusts! How the hell does a head gasket rust? Saw one at the shop the other day being torn apart. 100K is when failures seem to be popping up.īut the M111 has a known issue with blowing head gaskets,Īnd I'm getting close to needing that, but I'm at 188K miles, so can't complain. Truely, armed with the right knowledge, your car can last a long time.īut yeah, I'd go with a 60-90K replacement interval on the chain. Well at least you're aware of those issues and can take the proper action to I will definitely think twice before I purchase another MB product, but until then I want to upgrade and make my car as "bullet proof" mechanically as possible, especially with something as expensive as a motor to repair/replace.Jon 05 C230 Kompressor:thumbsup: It is bit discouraging when you spend good money for what has always been an rather expensive high-quality product just to get ANY serious faults. I tend to keep my cars a very long time so it is shocking that MB wont even admit up to and fix these things with recalls or repair kits and this is only the C-Class cars that I post up bout. Then you have the issues with the M271 wires as well. Thank God my 05 has a Behr radiator!! Seat controllers causing battery drainage, transmission wires that wick the oil into the car and cause issues with computers. Crappy Valeo radiators that blow out the transmissions when the fluids mix when they leak. NO DIPSTICKS for back-up unless you purchase them. LED readouts that you need to check engine functions fade to blank. I purchased my 05 because of its very low mileage and am quite shocked at all the area's of potential concern that fellow members continuously post about. I have to laugh every time I see the commercials running now and they say " MB-The best or nothing".
